The Ernest Hemingway Society https://www.hemingwaysociety.org/ is sponsoring one panel and one roundtable at the 38th Annual Conference of the American Literature Association https://americanliteratureassociation.org/ to be held at The Westin Copley Place in Boston, MA, May 26-29, 2027.
PANEL: This is an open call. We invite proposals for papers of about 2500 words/18 minutes in duration that engage with any aspect of Hemingway's life, work, and world. The panel is open to diverse perspectives by scholars on various career tracks and in various disciplines. Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are particularly encouraged to submit proposals. ROUNDTABLE: To mark the centenary of Men Without Women (1927) the Hemingway Society will sponsor a roundtable discussion on this short story collection in which Hemingway explores what happens to men when, as he described it to editor Maxwell Perkins, "the softening feminine influence through training, discipline, death or other causes, [is] absent" (Letters vol. 3 207). Presenters will speak for no more than five minutes, and the majority of the roundtable will involve discussion among participants and audience members.
To be considered for inclusion in the roundtable, please submit a CV and a 250-500 word précis (i.e. your "hot take") to Dr. Verna Kale vlk123@psu.edu. You may submit a separate précis for up to three of the stories in the collection (that is, you may submit up to three "hot takes" for consideration, though you would likely be asked to present on only one of them). The organizers will evaluate submissions and assign stories to participants based on what emerges from the proposals as having potential for a thought-provoking discussion. Proposals for both the panel and the roundtable are due by January 8, 2027. We will notify participants of their acceptance on or around January 15, 2027. You do not have to be a member of the Hemingway Society to submit a proposal, but you will be expected to join the Society upon confirmation of your acceptance.
